untitled note (2023)
text, ink, gloss paper.
untitled note is a text-based installation that explores the concept of unfinished notes. The narratives that can be pulled out of the diary entries, voice memos, and smartphone notes that contain our cursory thoughts. All these thoughts are arranged in some semblance of order on a trailing tapestry. Once they have run out, they are rearranged into a new narrative. Words are scribbled out and a different story begins to materialise. When they run out again, they are unrecognisable. Words becomes letters that struggle to attain permanence or materiality. They climb, toward the ceiling, obstructing others and forcing them to awkwardly walk through them or step over. They scroll vertically like the notes on my phone. I mimic this movement and walk with them. Finally they collapse, and find their way across the room into a pile of chaos, disorder, scrambled thoughts.
Shopping lists, group orders at restaurants, notes on a novel, break-up postmortem, passwords, stocktake at work, rejected art ideas, mental health reports, dreams, tagalog phrases, laundry settings, my exes concussion timeline.
Does the story make sense if we lay it out in order and will this linear series of thoughts help us understand our lived experience? Probably not.
